Wineglass Bay

This is Wineglass Bay on Tasmania’s South East coast. This view is from the top of Mount Amos. It provided the best perspective and most challenging bushwalk. You even have to sign a safety sheet in case you do not make it back.

I had been waiting for good weather and low tide to coincide for a couple of weeks. Finally, I decided to risk it with a wet morning which had a forecast for a mostly clear afternoon. There are many warning signs advising you not to attempt it in the wet as it is essentially a climb. Imagine steep slabs of rock covered with rivulets and very little to hold on to.

I was reminded of my first off-piste skiing attempt when I discovered, regardless of posture, every mountain surface has an angle which, if you lose your grip, accelerates you towards a cliff.

After covering myself with cuts and scrapes I finally reached the top with a couple of English lads who shared their bananas with me while we waited for the mist to clear. After an hour of sitting in the clouds, they started back down. I told them if it gets better they can pull my image from this blog. email benzworldblog@gmail.com if you would like high res.

Venus Bay

This is Venus Bay on the Eyre Peninsula, in South Australia. It is a small pretty seaside holiday town with an impressive curved jetty which was popular with fishing. Heading south is a wonderful coastline of craggy cliffs where Eagles and Osprey Nest.

Opera Evening

The Sydney Opera House is a remarkably photogenic building, which is helped by its position on the water in the harbour. There is a clear view from almost every angle. If you walk over the Harbour Bridge you can even look down on it. This shot was taken from Mrs Macquarie’s Chair in the Royal Botanic Gardens

New Year

For those of you still in 2013 Happy New Year 2014 from Australia. I took this shot of the New Year Sydney Fireworks from the tip of Cremorne Point. We had a clear 180 degree view of all 6 floating launch points plus the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. The only drawback to our location was a rising tide which temporarily blocked our way out. We both had a great time and wish you the best for the New Year.

Opera Bar

This is the Opera Bar which has great views of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. I am sure it is a lovely place to spend an evening as long as you can justify spending $9(£6) on a small bottle of beer. We went there to get some more shots of the Vivid Sydney Festival which has animated projections on many of the city’s landmarks.

We are now officially in Australia’s winter although it is hard to see how anyone can call blue skies and 21C winter. Sydney has just had its warmest May on record and it definitely feels significantly warmer than this time last year when we were in Melbourne.

Vivid Sydney

Last night we explored the Vivid Sydney Festival which runs from 6pm to midnight from 24th May to 10th June. There are dozens of different light displays and a free ferry which can take you to the various spots around the city. The Sydney Harbour Bridge was lit up with 100,000 individually programmable LED lights which were controlled by members of the public via a touch screen in Luna Park. Since returning to Australia 3 weeks ago I have been so busy with freelance photography this is the first time I have been out shooting for fun.

Arrival Sydney

We have arrived in Sydney, Australia. The flights and connections all went smoothly apart from a fairly heavy landing in Kuala Lumpur and Karen temporarily losing her bank card at Sydney train station. All is good now and we are looking forward to catching up with our down under relatives.

Circular Quay

This is Circular Quay in Sydney, Australia. I used the HSL / Grayscale panel in the Photoshop developer Camera RAW. This allows you so shift specific colours towards its neighbouring colours. In this case I used it to warm up the street lights and push the blues towards the purples. I also added the green reflection in the water.

This silhouette was taken at Streaky Bay in South Australia. We only stopped there briefly as there were no free campsites nearby. So far Western Australia and New South Wales have had the most free campsites and Victoria and South Australia have had the least.
