Chevrolet Engine

I discovered this Chevrolet Engine on display in a random car park in New South Wales. On a drive from Sydney to Southport in 2014, at some point while stopping for food, I stumbled upon the Summerland Sports and Classic Car Club.

To process this image I created a two-tone effect in the paintwork by pushing the blues towards the purples and the aquas towards the greens. This was done using Camera RAW which is the import engine for Photoshop.

Little Topar

These trucks were parked at the Little Topar Roadhouse which we stayed at on our way into and out of Broken Hill in New South Wales. We were told you could “get a good feed there” and the bacon, eggs and sausage breakfast did not disappoint.

We are currently staying at the Warrumbungle National Park. The rain seems to have been following us for the last two days. This has made all the Australians we have met very happy, however we had hoped to visit an observatory where you can attach your DSLR body to their telescope and get pictures of colourful gas clouds and nebula. If our flight to the UK were not leaving in a week we would probably wait for better weather. As it is we have arranged a visit to a mine on Tuesday before a final dash to Sydney.

Journey Begins

We hit the road today. We have a few stops in the UK before we fly to Australia on Thursday. We should be landing in Sydney on Friday evening. After arriving I will be able to post some new shots but for now I will use these road trains I shot last year as we crossed the Nullabor in Western Australia.

To develop this image the blue and green were desaturated in Camera RAW leaving a red spot colour.

Classic Holden

This is a 1961 EK Holden Special. It was the first time the Australian car maker introduced a model with an option for an automatic transmission. Holden is now a subsidiary of US-based General Motors. We saw this classic in a car park in Albany, Western Australia.

Puffing Billy

Yesterday we took a ride on the Puffing Billy Railway which runs from Belgrave to Gembrook in Victoria, Australia. It runs on a 2’6″ gauge lines and was built over 100 years ago. As you can see you can sit on the window sill and dangle your legs outside which adds to the experience.

Steam Engine

This is inside the cab of a steam engine at the Railway museum in Merredin. This image adds to the newly dubbed series of pictures named Mechanography. A little Orton Effect was used to process this image as well as some selective desaturation. We are spending a little more time in Hopetoun and plan to cross the Nullarbor at the end of February.

Baby Truck

This is what miners in Kalgoorlie call the baby truck. This one took a break from its 24/7 duty in the super pit to take part in the annual parade. The only reason its big brother did not make an appearance this year was it could not fit under the new power lines across the main street. There are 40 trucks like this each carrying 220 tonnes of rock with an average of 2g of gold per tonne. The drivers of these truck can earn £1000/day and they are always looking new drivers. The 500 meter deep Super pit at the edge of town has only recently restarted digging since the rise in the gold price has made it economically viable again. We spent an enjoyable 4 days in Kalgoorlie. We met some prospectors and have seen more nuggets of gold than you could imagine. We are now deep in the gold fields at a place called Niagara Dam. We had a close encounter with two Brumbies today and Karen also saw her first willy-willy this afternoon which she described as a perfect mini tornado about 6 foot tall and very loud. Tomorrow we head for Leonora.

Kalgoorlie Express

We have gone inland to the Goldfields of Western Australia. This train passed by our outback campsite last night pulling 135 cars full of ore from the Kalgoorlie mines. We celebrated Karen‘s birthday by checking in to a powered campervan site in Kambalda with hot showers. Tomorrow she has been promised a shopping trip to the gem stone and gold capital of Western Australia. It’s a good thing I start work in three weeks.

Jet Surfer

This jet surfer is a composite of four images. The desert dunes of western Egypt, A kite surfer from Dahab, The moon from an earlier post and a methane engine I found on this site. Unlike the last composite these images did not need as much adjustment as the lighting conditions were similar. The dunes did need their tonal range increasing. This was done by increasing the contrast to 100 and moving up the black point in Camera RAW. To compensate for the black point shift the Exposure also needed to be increased.
