Morning Glory

This cloud formation above Burketown, Australia is known as The Morning Glory. You would think 30 years in the UK would be enough to see every type of cloud but this meteorological phenomenon is especially rare. The roll or arcus cloud stretches from horizon to horizon but is only 100-200 metres above the ground. They have been seen randomly around the world but here in the southern part of the Gulf of Carpentaria is the only known location where the shape of the coastline ensures you have a good chance of seeing one every spring. This attracts glider pilots with the chance to ride a 1,000km wave.

My next stop will be the Burke and Wills Roadhouse after which I will photograph the mining towns of Cloncurry and Mount Isa.

Collins Street

This is a view of the 3rd and 4th tallest buildings in Australia as Photographed from the 2nd tallest. The centre building is 120 Collins Street, A postmodern style heavily influenced by iconic Art Deco buildings in New York. On the right is 101 Collins Street which also would not look out of place in a Ghostbusters film. This led me to make this composite by adding purple clouds in Photoshop.

The tallest building in Australia is not in Melbourne like these, nor is it even in a state capital. It is the Q1 on the Gold Coast in Queensland. Oz answer to UK‘s Blackpool tower.

Judd’s Lagoon

This is Judd’s Lagoon just outside Yuleba in Queensland, Australia. It has been our campsite for the last few days. It is a popular fishing spot and locals come here to cool off in the water. From here we plan to go west to Roma then Mitchell where Karen is looking forward to the Great Artesian Spa.

Purple Skyline

This evening skyline was taken in Sydney Harbour, New South Wales, Australia. To process this image I wanted to bring out the orange lights and purple sky. I started by using HSL in Camera RAW to boost the luminance and saturation of orange and a smaller boost to yellow and red to avoid posterization. I reduced the luminance of the blues, magentas and purples to darken the clouds. Finally some green tint was added to reduce the strength of the purple.

Lightning Ridge

Lightning Ridge is a mining town in New South Wales. It has the planets richest deposit of black opal. This corrugated iron building was used in the film The Goddess of 1967, which is about a Japanese man who travels to Australia to buy a car.

Broken Hill

This is one of the many frame heads which are scattered around Broken Hill in New South Wales. The wealth of minerals under this isolated city made Broken Hill Proprietary (BHP Billiton) the world’s largest mining company. We have been here for a couple of days and will be heading for Sydney once we visit neighbouring Silverton which has been used in many films including Mad Max II.

Arrival Sydney

We have arrived in Sydney, Australia. The flights and connections all went smoothly apart from a fairly heavy landing in Kuala Lumpur and Karen temporarily losing her bank card at Sydney train station. All is good now and we are looking forward to catching up with our down under relatives.
