Happy New Year 2017. This is The Lake Broadwater Conservation Park Campsite. I was photographing the stars when the camp next to us put something combustible on their fire. After 2 weeks on the road exploring the Maranoa region of Australia we arrived back on the Gold Coast yesterday.

Judd’s Lagoon

This is Judd’s Lagoon just outside Yuleba in Queensland, Australia. It has been our campsite for the last few days. It is a popular fishing spot and locals come here to cool off in the water. From here we plan to go west to Roma then Mitchell where Karen is looking forward to the Great Artesian Spa.

I saw these two swans on the river cam in front of Baits Bite Lock in the UK. You don’t often get fog in Australia (maybe in a Melbourne winter) so I was keen to go for a walk to capture the effect of the light.

This is Lake Burley Griffin in the Australian Capital Territory. Walter Burley Griffin was an American architect who was best known for his role in designing Canberra, Australia‘s capital city.

National Library

This is the National Library of Australia in Canberra. Like most public buildings in Australia it has a very good licensed cafe inside. Coming from the UK I found it a little curious you could buy a beer in a Museum or a Library but not a supermarket.

Canberra Skyline

No sooner than we crossed from Victoria into New South Wales we found ourselves in Australian Capital Territory. The home of Canberra and the seat of Australian Government. Canberra is an entirely planned city with the feeling of a university campus. The Parliament House in the centre is a low rise structure described by some as resembling a bunker covered with grass. In fact anyone can have a picnic on the roof. This image is one of a series of Australian Skylines which may become a calender someday.

Salt Lake

Today we left Australia‘s Goldfields and entered it’s Wheatbelt. This image was taken in an area between the two. It shows two of Australia’s environmental challenges. Fire and the rising salt level caused by historic deforestation. We camped at a place called Kokerbin Rock which has the title of Australia‘s third biggest monolith after the famous Uluru and Mt. Augustus which I had the chance to climb 15 years ago in my first visit to Australia. Tomorrow head East to the wonderfully Australian named Bruce Rock before heading south to The Deck in Hopetoun where we will be working over the festive period.

Stockton Lake

This is Stockton Lake near Collie which was our third camp site after stopping at Ironstone Gully Falls last night. Those of you who know Australia will realize the meandering route between sites. This is largely due to the need to pick up various provisions and water as well as the occasional desire to use toilet more substantial than an eco hole in the ground. We have found all our fellow campers to be very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. So far they have also all been Australian. This is a one difference between camping and the backpacker hostel route where you are less likely to meet locals. This lake was created from an old coal mine and is now a Recreation Area for all manner of water sports. I only know this from our camp site neighbour who worked here when it was a mine. As I write this we are heading towards Pine Plantation Picnic Area Camp site. I am planning to fit a cigarette lighter socket to the second battery in our van so I will not be limited to posting images while Karen is driving. I suspect I will not be forgiven if I flatten the main battery with my laptop and we are unable to start the engine in the morning.

Snowdon Route

This was taken on a family holiday to Wales in 2010. I used Camera RAW to process this image. I like to show what setting I use for each post unfortunately “Print Screen” does not record anything when the Camera RAW dialogue is open in Photoshop. I’ve managed to get round this by using “Problem Step Recorder” This is a bit of software which is included in Windows 7 and takes a screen grab each time the mouse is clicked. It saves them as heavily compressed jpegs but it is the only way I can show the settings I have used. I replaced the sky with part of this image because I wanted some more blue in it.

Swimming Pyramids

This was created by compositing three separate images. The Pyramids of Egypt, The Seas of Dahab and Rutland Water. Many adjustment layers and masks were needed in an attempt to balance the shot as each component was taken with different lighting conditions at different angles with different cameras in different countries.
