Rose Tunnel

This rose tunnel is on the Voyager Estate in Margaret River, Western Australia. There is a rose garden and red and white rose bushes at the end of every row of vines. There are a number of theories to why wine growers plant roses. They vary from purely aesthetic to practical bio-engineering. I suspect any floral diversity would be beneficial to the ecological environment.

Galah Cockatoo

This bird is one of Australia’s iconic animals. The Galah or Rose-breasted Cockatoo is one of the most common in mainland Australia. This one was in Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields of Western Australia. To process this image I desaturated the greens and boosted the reds. Some vignetting was also added to darken the edges.

Yellow Rose

This Yellow Rose was taken at the end of the Garden in Grantham, UK. I used sRGB colour space instead of my normal Adobe RGB. Colour space determines the actual colour a specific RGB value corresponds to. Adobe RGB has a wider range of colour but this does mean each colour is further apart. For 8bit files you can visibly see a change when you shift a value by just 1. This is not great if you want smooth gradients but it does give richer Cyans and Greens. The narrower sRGB colour range is the standard for web output as it approximates the colour range of most cheap computer displays, but for how long. The last display I bought boasted 100% Adobe RGB which means it will not be long before most can show these extra colours. For now I’m going to switch to sRGB to test the use of this colour space.

N.B. After testing Firefox reproduces colours far more faithfully than I.E.

Rose City

This is the Rose City in Petra, Jordan. To process this image the Recovery slider was set to 100. Normally this adjustment is used to recover detail lost in the highlights. In this image the highlights were not blown out however the Recovery adjustment was used to tone down the harsh brightness of the sun. The other main adjustment was to add some subtle split toning to give the rock its rose colour.

Valentine Rose

This is a rose from our old garden in Nottingham. I used a time saving trick to desaturate the greenery. Normally you would add a Hue/Sat layer and cut out a mask to get this effect. Instead I added a Black and White layer above the base layer and set the layer above that to lighter colour blend mode. The Black and White layer lets you adjust the brightness of individual colour channels. This setup lets you adjust which colours you want to desaturate. It gives you a lot of control and creates more natural effect than applying a mask to one area. I applied another layer to give a subtle Orton Effect. Finally I added a colour balance layer to achieve the velvet red colour of the original rose and give the leaves a slight tint.
