The Lumineers

These are the Lumineers playing the Crossroads stage at Bluesfest 2017. Their music has a folky edge with stomping rhythms and acoustic riffs. Although they are not strictly blues, We were told by festival director Peter Noble that it has been about more than blues for at least 20 years. He said his guiding principle when booking bands is to find artists who make music with people rather than computers, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

UPDATE: The Lumineers will return to Australia in November 2022. 13th in Brisbane, 15th in Sydney, and 18th in Melbourne. Tickets from Bluesfest Touring.

Forest Rain

This photograph was taken at Judd’s Lagoon just outside Yuleba in Queensland, Australia.

There is something magical about the light in a forest when the sun shines through the rain.

Petra Monastery

This is the Petra Monastery in Jordan. It is know as the rose city due to the colour of the rock. In 2008 it needed to be processed using HDR to get accepted by Shutterstock for Stock Photography. It is available for download here. This time I used standard tone adjustments in Camera RAW and a little split-toning to match the texture to this jungle temple. The RAW file developer in Photoshop has improved so much since this shot was taken it has made using HDR to extract detail redundant.

Yellow Lichen

I think this is lichen on the bark of a tree in Western Australia. It is easy to think of this state as all deserts and goldfields, however it has some of the worlds most majestic forests in it’s south west corner. If you recognize the type of bark or the yellow substance please leave a comment.

Tree Snake

This is a common tree snake which we encountered on Keppel Island, off the coast of Queensland. They come in a range of colours including black, brown, blue, grey, green and yellow. Although it is harmless, without an immediate identification and the fact that Australia contains all of the top 10 most venomous snakes in the world I decided to give it the respect it deserves as it slid under the chair I was sitting in.

Yellow Sunbird

This is a female Yellow-bellied / olive-backed sunbird. The male bird has an amazing metallic looking blue-black throat. They are similar to hummingbirds, nectar feeding on the wing and plucking spiders from webs. It is a pity she did not give our van the once over as she would have found a particularly fat, hairy, spider to eat. Instead it was left for us to discover one night after we had got into bed and were about to turn out the lights. After failing to persuade the giant insect to leave, it was unfortunately necessary to dispatch the creature with an axe.

Flowering Frangipani

This is one of two Frangipani trees in front of our house on the Gold Coast in Queensland. They have been covering the lawn with yellow and pink flowers since the beginning of the Australian summer.

This weekend we have been working on our van in preparation for a Christmas trip to Keppel Island. Last year we took a day trip to the island. This year we will be camping there for four days so we will have much more time to explore the Great Barrier Reef.

Doubtful Dahlia

I think this is a dahlia but I can not be sure. If you know better, please leave a comment. It was photographed last weekend at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. I try to get a positive identification before I post flora and fauna, but an evening of searching yellow flowers on google yielded nothing certain.

Sprint Boat

This is what happens when you strap a V8 to a dinghy. Today was round 2 & 3 of the Australian Superboat Champsionships. I was there with some friends from work (Panedia) because one of them had persuaded our boss to let him stick a bunch of cameras to a boat with a suction cup. The rig on the front is for 360 video and the one on top is for 3D video. Fortunately the yellow and black boat avoided any unscheduled aerobatics. The green and blue boat was not so lucky

Mothers Day

This yellow sun flower was photographed at the Bundaberg Botanic Garden in Queensland.

Today is Mothers Day in Australia. It originates from the american holiday pioneered by Anna Jarvis in 1908. Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday in 1914. By the 1920′s it had become so commercialized that Anna tried to rescind it. She organized boycotts, threatened lawsuits and was finally arrested for disturbing the peace during a protest.
