Dust Storm

I drove through this dust storm shortly after crossing the border from South Australia into Victoria earlier today. I have never experienced anything like it before. I did not expect it to include bands of heavy rain. This unusual combination turned much of the traffic completely orange. At a couple of points, it overwhelmed my windscreen wipers so I had to stop and clean it by hand. The moment I opened the door I was hit by the strong winds and dust. It was how I imagine stepping onto the surface of Mars.

Tomorrow, after I clean my vans air filter, I should cross into New South Wales on my way to the Blue Mountains.

Mount Panorama

This is the Mount Panorama circuit in Bathurst. This race track is also a public road, and Karen found herself driving on it by accident the first time we drove to New South Wales from Victoria. This time it was my turn to do a lap in our van.

We have arrived in Sydney now and we have started making preparations for our flight to the UK at the end of the week.

Lego City

Today we walked from Southport to Surfers Paradise in Queensland, Australia to see this Lego City. It is a 6mile/10km round trip which is mostly along the Gold Coast beach. We are both looking forward to visiting Brisbane next weekend and hope to visit Stradbroke Island too.

Melbourne Streets

This night shot was taken of Melbourne in Victoria. To process this shot maximum desaturation was used on the greens, blues and purples. To help the taxis stand out the saturation of the oranges and yellows was increased.

Like many recent posts, this was taken last year. I have been developing RAW files from my archive as our UK stopover has taken longer than expected. We have booked our flights back to Australia now and will be posting new images after we land on the 10th May.

Liberation Square

This is Tahrir Square in Egypt. This part of Cairo saw the start of the Pro Democracy marches which ended Hosni Mubarak’s reign and started a chain reaction which is now sweeping across North Africa and the Middle East. When I took this image in 2007 I was spotted by someone in the government building on the right. A short while later I was politely asked to stop taking pictures. Hopefully the new regime will allow greater freedom for the Egyptian people.

Festival Cycle

I had a phone call today telling me this image has won the Cambridge Folk Festivals Reward My Ride photo competition. The brief was to submit an image of green transport to the festival. I did not think the image was good enough for the photoblog but as its won me £300 to spend at my local cycle shop I think it has earned its place.

Edinburgh Lights

This is my submission to VFXY’s weekly theme. This weeks theme is Lights. These are the layers I used to build up the image. The Hue/Saturation layer on top was needed to turn the traffic lights green. The auto white balance in the camera had decided they should be blue. It just shows you cannot always trust a cameras auto settings to get it right.
